Even though Mt. Vernon and Lawrence North both had their opportunities, it was Lawrence North that eventually prevailed 6-5 on Tuesday. The game was tied at five with Lawrence North batting in the top of the seventh when there was an error, scoring one run.
Mt. Vernon lost despite out-hitting Lawrence North 14 to 11.
Lawrence North took an early lead in the first inning. Taylor Erschen homered on a 1-0 count in the first inning, scoring one run.
Mt. Vernon evened things up at five in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mackenzie McCann drove in one when she singled in the fourth inning.
Lawrence North scored four runs in the third inning. Lawrence North‘s big inning was driven by a home run by Raniah Rogers and a single by Bailey Hogan.
Taylor Erschen earned the win for Lawrence North. She pitched seven innings, surrendering five runs, 14 hits, and striking out three. Kaitlyn Nugent took the loss for Mt. Vernon. She went four innings, surrendering one run, two hits, striking out one, and walking one.
Victoria Whyde started the game for Mt. Vernon. She threw three innings, giving up five runs, nine hits, striking out two, and walking zero.
Home runs for Lawrence North came when Taylor Erschen homered in the first inning and Raniah Rogers homered in the third inning.
Mt. Vernon had 14 hits in the game. Sydnee Perry, Anelise Worden, Makenzie Gee, Kaitlyn Nugent, and Mackenzie McCann each collected multiple hits for Mt. Vernon. Victoria Whyde and Mackenzie McCann each drove in two runs to lead Mt. Vernon.
Lawrence North collected 11 hits. Taylor Erschen, Amanda Spafford, and Maddie Howe each collected multiple hits for Lawrence North.
Lawrence North will play Lawrence Central for the IHSAA Sectional 10 championship game at 7:00 pm on May 24th at Mt. Vernon High School.
