Saturday, Feb. 13 was the Regional round of the 2016 Indiana High School Athletic Association Girl’s Basketball State Tournament. The field of 32 teams in each class has been narrowed down to the top four teams after the two rounds of regionals.
The Class 1A Semi-State game between Argos (23-3) and Tri-Central (17-11) will be played at Crown Point or Carroll. Argos averages 51.8 PPG and holds their opponent to an average of 32.8 PPG. Tri-Central averages 49.5 PPG on offense, and allow 42.3 defensively. My prediction for this game is that Argos will win 47-41.
Jac-Cen-Del (25-1) will face Vincennes Rivet (25-3) at Richmond or Jeffersonville. The Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles average 62.8 PPG while allowing 34.7 PPG. Vincennes Rivet defeated Jac-Cen-Del 50-40 at Semi-State in the 2013-14 season to advance to the State Finals. This season, the Lady Patriots put up 61.6 PPG, and holds the defense to only 36.8 PPG. My prediction is that Jac-Cen-Del will advance with a 50-48 victory.
The Class 2A Semi-State between Oregon-Davis (26-2) and Lafayette Central Catholic (23-5) will also be played at either Crown Point or Carroll. The Lady Bobcats from Oregon-Davis are trying to make it back to the State Finals after winning the 2013-14 Class 1A State Championship over Vincennes Rivet. Oregon-Davis has a high scoring offense that averages 81.9 PPG while holding their opponents to 38.2 PPG. Reigning Class 1A State Champion Lafayette Central Catholic continues to show competitive they are in 2A as well. The Lady Knights average 55 PPG, and allow 38.1. My prediction is that Oregon-Davis will win 60-47.
On bottom half of the bracket, it will be Covenant Christian (22-5) vs. Providence (21-7) at Richmond or Jeffersonville. The Lady Warriors of Covenant Christian score 59.2 PPG, and allow 39.1 PPG defensively. Providence made it to Semi-State in the 2014-15 season, but lost to Heritage Christian by 20. This season, the Lady Pioneers average 50.1 offensively, and allow 40.1 defensively. My prediction: Covenant Christian wins 50-45.
The Class 3A Semi-State game between South Bend St. Joseph’s (25-1) against Heritage Christian (24-4) will be at Crown Point or Carroll. The Lady Indians from South Bend St. Joseph average 61.3 PPG, and hold their opponents to an average of 34.3 PPG. The most recent Semi-State game for South Bend St. Joseph’s was during the 2006-07 season under former head coach, Mike Megyese. Heritage Christian has become a well known team throughout the past several seasons. Heritage Christian is the reigning back-to-back Class 2A state champs, defeating Fort Wayne Canterbury both times. The Lady Eagles put up 64.3 PPG on the scoreboard, and allow 44.2 PPG. I feel as if this will be another close matchup with South Bend St. Joseph’s winning 53-49.
In Richmond or Jeffersonville, it will be Lebanon (22-6) vs. North Harrison (27-2). Lebanon has not played in a Semi-State game since the 2000-01 season. The Lady Tigers score 66.9 PPG, and allows the defense to score 47 PPG. The last time North Harrison made a semi-state appearance was in the 2002-03 season where the Lady Cat suffered an 81-76 double overtime loss to Beech Grove, ending their season with their only loss at 25-1. This year, the Lady Cats average 58.1 PPG, and allow 38.6 PPG on defense. My prediction, a 53-52 win for Lebanon.
Last but not least, Class 4A. The Crown Point or Carroll game will be between Penn (26-2) and Homestead (26-2). Penn lost by 10 Bedford North Lawrence in the 2013-14 Class 4A State Championship. The Lady Kingsmen also made it to regionals last season. Currently, Penn averages 64.5 PPG on offense, and holds their opponents to 33.3 PPG. Homestead was the 2014-15 State Runner-up after q 62-56 loss to Columbus North. The Lady Spartans can certainly score, averaging 71.5 PPG offensively, but allow their opponents to score 44.7 PPG. I predict that Penn will win 55-52.
Indianapolis Roncalli had a tough fought game against Greenfield-Central to make it the Semi-State game with a 46-45 victory. It has been several years since the Lady Rebels last made it to Semi-State. Roncalli averages 64.2 PPG, but give up 49.2 PPG on defense. The reigning Class 4A State Champion, Columbus North averages 63.3 PPG. The Lady Rebel’s defense allows 44.7 PPG. My prediction for this game 56-54, Columbus North with the win.
Best of luck to all 16 team next Saturday playing Indiana’s game, basketball!
